5 Keys To Writing A Good Literary Essay: A Guide For Students

Writing a good essay can be as simple task if one knows the steps to follow. There are many different styles of writing an essay and sometimes a school or university may request a specific layout or style but they all follow the same basic guidelines. I will attempt to outline the 5 most important steps one must follow when writing a literary essay:

  1. Brainstorm
  2. Before you begin writing your final piece, it is helpful to brainstorm some ideas. During this process it is important to consider all ideas as equally valid and worthy of being in your paper so don’t disregard any, no matter how ridiculous the idea may seem. When you feel you have all the ides you can come up with you are now ready for the next phase.

  3. Plan
  4. Sort through all your ideas and options and choose the best ones, or ones that you think will help develop your paper the best. Consider how you will use it and where in your essay it will be used. By doing this you ensure the most effective delivery at all points and you can also discover any possible flaws, or areas that could be improved before you start writing.

  5. Introduction
  6. This is the first paragraph of your essay, its purpose is to inform the reader about your intention and guide them into the body of your topic without giving too much detail. The intention is to spark the reader’s interest, either by making a controversial statement or a transitory hook, giving them no choice but to read on into the rest of the paper.

  7. Body
  8. The body of the essay can be two to three paragraphs long and in this part you build upon the ideas mentioned in the introduction. If you have more than one significant point to discuss, you can also do so here. You should avoid straying from the main topic however, only relevant points should be discussed and they must all follow from the main topic as stated in the first paragraph.

  9. Climax and conclusion
  10. In the final paragraph you must bring all your points together into one solid statement or declaration. All the ideas stated previously must culminate into one idea that is undeniable based on the points discussed before, leaving the reader with a sense of completion after having read your entire paper.
